More than 1 in 4 fatal drowning victims are children younger than 14, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Whether swimming at the beach or in a pool, it is important for parents to make sure their children are playing safe in the water.

When swimming, KidsHealth suggest parents should:

  • Never allow children to swim unsupervised.
  • Keep safety gates around pools when not swimming.
  • Pay attention to the depth of the water.
  • Use flotation devices appropriately and when necessary.
