According to an article from CBS-Philly News, the initial crash occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. near the Route 1 exit in Bensalem Township, when a vehicle lost control and struck a car that was heading east. The situation got out of control when other other vehicles were unable to avoid colliding with traffic that built up behind the collision, setting off a chain reaction of crashes.
More than 30 people were transported to local trauma centers for treatment while thousands of others had their commutes seriously delayed by wrecked vehicles or lane closures set up to give emergency vehicles access to crash sites.
