DRPA Setting Up Sobriety Checkpoints To Battle Drunk Driving
August 18, 2011
The Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) will set up several drunk driving checkpoints over the next few weeks as part of the statewide “Over The Limit, Under Arrest” campaign. Philly.com reported that authorities announced the checkpoints would begin Friday and continue through September 5th.
The campaign is part of a nationwide program that hopes to educate the public on the dangers of drunk driving, while also stepping up patrols to ensure drivers are not under the influence behind the wheel. According to DRPA Police Chief David McClintock, “This initiative brings attention to not only the serious fines and penalties drunk drivers can face, but also the grave danger those drivers pose to all individuals on the road.”
DRPA’s most recent intoxicated driver checkpoint occurred last winter through the holiday season and netted 9 drunk driver arrests. Authorities were also able to apprehend one fugitive, made one drug arrest, issued 11 tickets for speeding, and issued citations for more than 30 other moving and non-moving violations.
