How Officials Are Combating Pennsylvania Drunk Driving Accidents

Drunk driving is a very serious issue in Pennsylvania. Records indicate a total of 48,200 motorists were arrested for alcohol-related offenses and 364 people were killed in a Pennsylvania drunk driving accident last year alone.

So what is being done to reduce drinking and driving in our state?

Officials say stricter penalties for inebriated driving and the use of new technology are two ways Pennsylvania is battling the problem.

According to New Castle News, Senator John Rafferty has drafted a bill that calls for stiffer penalties for motorists caught repeatedly driving under the influence. His law would establish a mandatory minimum five-year sentence for anyone with a prior DUI conviction who causes a fatal collision while drinking and driving.

Current law requires many repeat DUI offenders to have an ignition interlock system installed on their vehicles. These devices prevent the vehicle from starting if the driver has consumed any amount of alcohol. They have been found effective in preventing drunk drivers from getting on the road, which is why another proposed law is calling for even first-time offenders to be mandated to have the devices installed on their vehicle.
