Boating Safety

June 16, 2009

More than 5,000 boating accidents occurred in 2007, according to the U.S. Coast Guard, with 215 accidents occurring in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.

Unfortunately, many of these accidents could have been prevented with proper training. To avoid a boat accident next time you go out on the water, follow these safety tips:

•    Learn how to swim properly before boating
•    Take boating safety courses
•    Always wear a life jacket
•    Check the weather and know the conditions of the water
•    Don’t consume alcohol while on a boat
•    Remain aware of other boaters
•    Get a free vessel safety check regularly
