Hospital Acquired Infections Increasing In Severity

The CBS Evening News (9/30, story 8, 4:20, Couric) reported, “America’s hospitals are places of healing and hope, but they’re also home to a growing threat. … An increasing number of patients are being infected with a new class of superbugs that are difficult, if not impossible to treat.”
On a parallel note, the Associated Press reported that CDC director Thomas Frieden has outlined six “winnable” health priorities including reducing the incidence of hospital acquired infections. The list also includes smoking, AIDS, obesity/nutrition, teen pregnancy and auto injuries.
According to several sources, hospital infections result in several billion dollars in costs each year and result in between 78,000 and 100,000 deaths per year.
