$4.85 billion payout from Merck & Co. in drug injury lawsuits

The Asbury Park Press reported that Merck & Co. has agreed to pay $4.85 billion in the largest drug injury settlement case in history over its painkiller, Vioxx. The painkiller was pulled from shelves on Sept. 30, 2004 when researchers discovered its propensity to double patients’ risk of heart attack and stroke.
The drug injury lawsuit payout is a major concession by the pharmaceutical giant, but they are stressing that they are not admitting fault and that this is not a class action suit. About 265 potential class action suits and 47,000 drug injury victims were involved in the drug injury lawsuits against Merck & Co.
