Philadelphia Woman Uses Loss Of Sister To Promote Safe Driving

February 23, 2012

A Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, woman is using the loss of her sister in a distracted driving accident as an example of the dangers of not paying attention to the road while driving. According to an article released by NBC-10 Philadelphia, the woman has recently been speaking with local high school students on the subject.

The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that the majority of distracted drivers are 20 years old or younger. Of all drivers within that age group who were involved in fatal crashes, 16% were reported to have been distracted while driving.

The woman tells students the story of how her then 28-year-old sister, who was also nine-months pregnant with her second child at the time, was driving home from a doctor’s office on Pitman-Downer Road in Washington Township, Pennsylvania, when she was struck by another vehicle. A 21-year-old man who was distracted by his cellphone hit her head-on after he veered into her lane.

In addition to her speaking engagements, she and her family lobby for changes in legislation that would make the penalties for distracted driving accidents the same as those for drunk drivers.

The Philadelphia Car Accident Lawyers with Lundy Law hope that we can all learn to put our phones down while behind the wheel. Causing an accident that leads to loss of life or serious injuries to answer a phone call or text message is never worth it.

Philadelphia Construction Worker Injured In Fall From Lift

February 16, 2012

A 33-year-old construction worker was injured Tuesday after a motorized lift he was in, known as a cherry picker, toppled over. According to reports from NBC-Philadelphia, the accident happened on the corner at 18th and Race Streets, just outside the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, at around 2:00 in the afternoon.

The archdiocese of the cathedral told reporters that the worker was in the lift doing minor repair work on the cathedral’s rectory when the heavy piece of equipment toppled over. The collapsed machine stretched across two lanes of traffic and into a grassy knoll.

The worker fell approximately 50 feet and suffered a broken femur bone. He was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital where he remained in stable condition for several days before being released.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has opened an investigation into the incident and say that high winds and uneven pavement are possible factors that contributed to the accident. The agency says that falls are a leading cause of death for construction workers, estimating that approximately 442 workers have died in a single year.

Two People Injured In Mill Creek Car Accident

February 9, 2012

An unlicensed driver is responsible for an accident that left two people injured this past Sunday morning in Mill Creek, Delaware. Reports from ABC 6 News say that the accident happened at around 9:00 AM on Kirkwood Highway.

Reports from the Mill Creek police department on the accident say that 2007 Honda Accord, driven by an 80-year-old man, was heading down the highway when a minivan suddenly cut in front of the vehicle. To avoid being hit, the elderly man swerved the Honda off of the highway and into the parking lot of a shopping center. The Honda then collided with a light pole and turned onto its driver’s side. The elderly driver was trapped in the car for a half of an hour waiting for rescue crews. He was finally pulled form the wreckage and he and his 76-year-old passenger were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The 23-year-old driver of the minivan was charged with driving without a valid license and improper lane change for causing the accident.

Traumatic Brain Injury Lawsuit Against The NFL Consolidated

February 2, 2012

The lawsuits against the National Football League (NFL) by former players grew Tuesday as four more cases representing some 300 ex-players and their spouses were consolidated in a Philadelphia courtroom. According to reports from My Fox Philly, the lawsuits blame the NFL for concussion-related traumatic brain injuries that led to dementia and other brain diseases.

The players claim that the league was negligent in their response to numerous reports over the years of headaches, dizziness, and dementia. One example of the neglect comes at the hands of one former player who is the only living diagnosed person to suffer from a degenerative brain disease known as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE. The disease is only found in those who have suffered multiple traumatic head injuries. Other players involved in the suit have no symptoms yet, but just want to be monitored more closely from now on.

The NFL says that it will defend itself against the claims, citing that the player’s collective bargaining agreements do not allow them to make such claims against the league.

The Philadelphia traumatic brain injury lawyers with Lundy Law know that sports organizations, from professional to recreational, have a responsibility to keep their players as safe from injury as possible. Failure to do so could be seen as neglect. We are here to help you if you have suffered a traumatic brain injury at no fault of your own.
