Toyota recall issues being investigated again by NHTSA

The Detroit Examiner had an interesting editorial on the ongoing Toyota recalls. It seems they are being investigated again by the National Transportation Safety Administration. Read below:

If you are reading this, the odds are good that you are very familiar with the recall issues over the past year for Toyota, with their tardiness in issuing proper recalls in the US costing them $16.4 million. That fine stems from Toyota’s deadly unintended acceleration issues but since the news of that whole mess has become public, we have seen a ton more issues with Toyota’s recall process causing question of how much quality they actually put into their vehicles. This morning Consumer Reports announced that the NHTSA is once again investigating Toyota for a delay in a recall issue from the 1989-1998 T1000 pickups and 4Runner SUVs.

Update: NHTSA probes delay in Toyota steering relay rod recall

Here’s another indication of trouble for Toyota. A report in USA Today indicates that Toyota waited 11 months after recalling trucks in Japan for a steering defect before it recalled nearly 1 million 4Runner SUVs and T100 and Hi Lux pickups in the U.S.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it has reports of three deaths and seven injuries from the faulty steering relay rods on the 1989 to 1998 model trucks and has asked Toyota to explain the gap between a recall in Japan in October 2004 and one in the U.S. of 977,839 similar vehicles in September 2005.

Toyota says it will cooperate with NHTSA’s investigation, but the new allegations of foot-dragging could deal “another severe blow” to Toyota’s “already fragile consumer trust,” says Jesse Toprak, vice president of industry trends at auto-industry researcher TrueCar.com.

NHTSA: Toyota may have withheld recall info

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is launching an investigation into whether Toyota Motor Co. delayed telling investigators in 2005 that a known defect on compact trucks in Japan was also a problem in the United States.

Toyota (TM) later recalled the trucks in the U.S. for a steering relay rod that was prone to cracking.

Incentives helped Toyota sales rise 24%

Don’t feel too bad for Toyota. According to the Detroit Free Press Toyota’s April sales jumped 24% from a year earlier as aggressive discounts and interest-free loans continue to override consumers’ worries about unintended acceleration or other recall issues.

Finishing third for the month behind General Motors and Ford, Toyota remains unfazed by a continuing series of recalls. The dominant Japanese automaker’s iconic Prius hybrid did particularly well, rising 50% from a year earlier, despite a recall earlier this year to revise software controlling the brakes.

Sales of all Toyota hybrids totaled 17,242 in April, a 41% increase from a year earlier as gas prices have risen near or above $3 a gallon in many parts of the country.
